AFRICA by Patrick Robert
Intro Patrick Robert
I did not really choose to take an interest in Africa. When I started reporting internationally, there had already been many events in Africa and few volunteers to go there. So I went to Africa without any ulterior motive or prejudice. I then discovered that a fundamental chapter of our history was being written before our indifferent eyes:
Patrick Robert Biography
Born in 1958, Robert received a degree in agronomy and began his career in photography as an assistant in fashion and advertising. In 1980 he became a lab technician in Paris but soon graduated to full-time freelance photography. Since 1982 he has covered virtually every war in Africa and the Middle East, starting with the Iraq-Iran war and the US conflict with Libya. He joined Sygma in 1987 and covered the Palestinian uprising in the Israeli occupied territories, the Soviet war in Afghanistan, the revolution in Romania, the fall of Soviet Union and the eastern communist regimes, the war in Chad, Somalia, Libya, Bosnia, Georgia, Rwanda, Liberia, Sierra-Leone, south Sudan, Burundi, DR Congo and Congo-Brazzaville, Kosovo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Tuareg uprising, Afghanistan, Iraq, Ivory Coast.
Robert was seriously wounded by small arms fire in Liberia in 2003.
He received 7 awards for his reports on the civil war in Liberia, and 2 for the Kurdish exodus following the first the gulf war.
He is presently freelancing, based in Paris and represented by Corbis.
