Architectural Divide

July 16 - 30 Oct 2005, Photographs by Gary Knight/VII
For the Israeli Government the structure they call the “Separation Barrier” is a security measure that represents a legitimate means of preventing Palestinian terrorists reaching Israeli targets; for Palestinians and some international observers it represents a land grab and a violation of Palestinian human rights. The estimated costs vary from between 400 and 1000 million US dollars and the length is approximately 660 kilometers long.
This barrier represents different things to different people, it really depends what side of it you are on.
This barrier has been photographed many times by many photographers during its construction, usually juxtaposed with signs of life, whether people engaged in commerce, protesting or trying to get to work.
I did not attempt to do that; I am interested in it only as an object.
I have been photographing architecture and archaeology for two decades and for me this object is a substantial piece of architecture. I photographed it in and around a city where architecture has been fought over and argued about for centuries and it is one of many barriers I have photographed over the last 20 years that were designed to keep one community apart from another.
Whether built by the former communist dictatorships of Eastern Europe, the Chinese Imperial dynasties, the Persians or the Romans, all the other walls I have photographed that were built over the preceding 4000 years cost a fortune, failed to achieve their stated aims and fell down.
