June 4th - July 10th 2005, The World in Conflict: photographs by Agency France Press
This exhibition originates from the 10th anniversary of the Bayeux-Calvados prize for war correspondents in 2004.
It brings together 100 pictures taken by more than 60 photographers. The layout weaves historic and geographic scenes to reconstitute events on the five continents.
The exhibition shows the terrible impact of the modern-day conflicts which have shaken the world. It captures defining moments in the past tumultuous decade -- from East Timor to Iraq or the Balkans, even into the jungles of Colombia.
The selection seeks to adopt a unified tone: the photos do not show war as such, but the consequences of these dramatic events on the populations.
AFP is honoured through this exhibition to be able to pay tribute to all those men and women who have risked their lives to act as our witnesses on the ground.
War photography has its origins in the mid-19th century with the battlefield images of the Crimean War (1855) and then the American Civil War (1860). It was these images that were to overturn the often-romantic notions of war. But it was not until the 1930s that photojournalism was to become a true witness for the public at large.
Photographers have to be in the heart of the action. They risk not only being caught in the cross fire, but also becoming a target for the warring parties who don't want them to be present.
Their mission is to give an independent and balanced account of events, often defying governments and their armies seeking to manipulate the flow of information.
The arrival of digital photography and lightweight satellite antennas has revolutionised coverage on the ground. Pictures can now be sent from the remotest places on earth in just a matter of minutes. Thus photography is providing round-the-clock information...
But the media pays a heavy price for this. To date 40 journalists have been killed during the war in Iraq, most of them photographers and camera crew.
War correspondents are in permanent danger, and yet they continue to do their job.
This exhibition is a tribute to their courage and professionalism.
